We come before You in prayer and supplication, stunned and heartbroken by the merciless atrocities carried out against our beloved State of Israel and its People, turning the Festival of our Rejoicing into a day of our suffering. |
אָנוּ מִתְאַבְּלִים עַל אָבְדָן מֵאוֹת אֲנָשִׁים נָשִׁים וְטַף אַשֶּׁר נִרְצְחוּ בְזָדוֹן, וּמִתְפַּלְּלִים עַל נַּפְשּׁוֹתָם. |
We mourn the loss of many hundreds of women, men and children brutally murdered in these attacks and pray for their souls. |

אָבִינוּ מַּלְכּנוּ, רַחֵם עַל אַחֵינוּ הַשְּׁבוּיִים, וְהוֹצִיאֵם מֵאֲפֵלָה וְצַלמָוֶת לִגְאֻלָּה, מוֹסְרוֹתֵיהֶם תְּפַּתַּח וּמִמְצוּקוֹתֵיהֶם הַצִילֵם, וְהָשִׁיבֵם מְהֵרָה לְחֵיק מִשְׁפְּחוֹתֵיהֶם. |
[Our Father, our King] may the blessed Holy One have compassion on those who are being held hostage and enable them to emerge from the darkness of the shadow of death to their freedom; may He break their bonds, deliver them from distress, and bring them swiftly home to their families’ embrace. |

A prayer for Israel offered by the Office of the Chief Rabbi of the United Hebrew Congregations of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth, Efraim Mirvis on 12 October 2023, in the aftermath of the massacres perpetrated by HAMA”S and their allies in Gaza on the residents and citizens of the State of Israel on Shemini Atseret 5784. The prayer was originally published on the website of the Office of the Chief Rabbi and disseminated via its social media accounts. I have added a few missing words in brackets, parsed the text by phrase side-by-side with its translation, added citations to all quotes, and presented the vocalized text in Unicode Hebrew. –Aharon Varady
